The Olin Studio

For many years, Professor Laurie Olin from the University of Pennsylvania has been taking groups of graduate landscape architecture students to international locations as part of an annual studio project focused on real-world design problems. These location-specific projects may last for a one, two, or three year period. For 2009, possibly continuing into 2010 and 2011, this studio will focus on urban and rural design issues that have been identified by the Slavonice City Council, within and around the city of Slavonice in the Czech Republic.

The Centre for the Future

is an international Think-and-Do-Tank which promotes research and action directed towards a sustainable, just and diverse future.  Sustainability requires creating new ways to live and prosper while ensuring an equitable, healthy future for all people and for our entire planet, so that society and its members are able to meet their needs and attain their greatest potential in the present, while indefinitely preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems, resources and culture for our descendants. Sustainability is a critical part of the foundation of civil society in the twenty-first century.

Purpose of the Centre

The Centre is a home for conferences, work sessions, and educational meetings; educational partnerships; design studios and charettes; regional clean water and alternative energy development; book and media publications; a gallery for art and exhibitions relating to sustainability; a dedicated information centre and resource library; and research into the development of the first Czech GreenMBA program.

The Centre for the Future recognizes that healthy environments, sustainable communities, secure local water, energy and food supply, and open civic conversation and government are the foundation of open societies in the Twenty-first Century.  We call this combination Green Diplomacy and we believe it represents a major future shift in the dealings between nation states.

The Centre for the Future will bring passion and reason together to explore major issues and to support healthy natural, cultural and intellectual systems.  Our goal is to develop tools for furthering sustainability and civil society which are accountable, effective, and affordable.
