The European Greenbelt runs over 8,000km from the arctic circle to the Black Sea and the Mediteranean, along the line of the old Iron Curtain. The isolation of the Iron Curtain from human activity preserved biodiversity that, in the last 60 years, had disappeared on both sides of it. 23 European nations have collaborated to protect this strip of biodiversity as a preserve, and to extend it with additional conservation areas.

The Centre for the Future is a full member organization of the European Greenbelt. We believe that the Greenbelt is a perfect testground for an important aspect of future sustainabiliy - how human populations can successfully live in close proximity to lands in which true biological health and biodiversity are maintained.
